You can depart from any airport in Birmingham, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester, Glasgow, Bristol, London and other several airports around the UK. Carriers that provide regular scheduled flights to Mexico include Virgin Atlantic and British Airways.

Thomas Cook and Thomson flights offer charter services between Mexico and the UK with flights journeying frequently during the week. The average flight time between Cancun and UK is 8-9 hours and it could cost you between £540-£1200.

While in Mexico the cities and islands of Tulum, Valladolid, Isla Holbox, Cancun, Yucatan, Chichen Itza and Ek Balam can be combined seamlessly with each other. This is possible due to the effortless and efficient transport system between these cities.

Lodging in Mexico is unbelievably affordable especially if you choose to use a combination of Airbnb and budget hotels which are comfortable and well maintained. These hotel rooms provide air conditioning in hot climatic regions, Wi-Fi, and toiletries. Room space will cost you an average of £22-£30 per night.

If you find yourself in Valladolid you could try the hotel, Posada Osorio. It’s a perfect budget hotel with close proximity to Valladolid’s city square. Its located in a central position making it easy to access every part of the city. You could choose to visit the pink waters of Las Coloradas or access Chichen Itza which is only 45 minutes away via bus.

If instead, you decide to stay in Isla Holbox the Golden Paradise Hotel is a really viable accommodation option. The allure of these hotel rooms lies in their beautiful yards that are covered with rich and vibrant hammocks dappled by palm trees.

Although the hotel is not directly situated on the beach front its only a 10-minute walk away from the beach and center of town which is full of shops and restaurants.

You could also choose to stay in hotels that are around the main strip of beaches. However, the rooms in these hotels can get a bit pricey with a room going for as much as £53 per night.

Transportation around Mexico is fairly cheap and accessible, you will have an array of alternatives to choose from, these include minivans, buses or taxis. Taxis found in downtown usually have a flat charge that does not exceed £2 unless you are going to areas frequented with tourists where taxi drivers tend to overcharge.

Also, make sure you always ask how much it will cost you to travel to your destination before jumping in. This will save you from shouting matches with taxi drivers after disagreeing on fare price.

If we had to recommend the best way to get around Mexico we would advise using buses. Public buses are the best and cheapest way to travel around town and view the numerous attractions all over. What’s more, you will not have to haggle over fare price since bus charges are fixed, unlike taxi prices.

Buses that do not go towards the hotel zone are less than a penny per person while buses going towards hotel zones are slightly more expensive. The other best thing about public buses is that a majority of them can pick you up and stop anywhere along the buses’ route.

You do not have to wait for them at selected bus stops unless you are in the city center where the buses are forced to make stops in specifically designated bus stops. The buses are reliable and available through most of the day and identifying them is also easy since they are all marked with numbers and destinations they are travelling to.

As expected restaurants found in Isla Holbox and Playa del Carmen are the poshest and most expensive. However, this shouldn’t discourage you since food is generally cheap and costs around £3-£6 for a meal at a sit-down eatery. Can you imagine paying £3 for a meal that’s not only sweet but also fills you up?

If you are in Cancun you should definitely visit Parque Las Palapas park to get your cheap fix. Locals visit Parque Las Palapas to eat and wind down. You will find food carts, souvenir shops, outdoor food court, playgrounds and live entertainment spots. For instance, you can get half grilled chicken with Arroz (rice), frijoles (bean), tortillas and salsa (sauce) at £3 only.

Attractions are also generally inexpensive and you won’t spend a lot of money on them. You could visit the colonial cities of Merida and Valladolid. The cenote in Valladolid is also free of charge. If you are a history buff or interested about the Mayan civilisation you could visit the Mayan ruins in Ek Balam, Chichen Itza, and Tulum.

The Mayan Ruins at Tulum cost £4 while those at Ek Balam cost £8. The famed ruins at Chichen Itza are larger and better preserved than the ones in Tulum and Ek Balam hence demanding a higher price of £11.

An entire day of multi-stop trips in the towns of Chiapas and Oaxaca cost £11-£19 per person. You could take two-hour surfing lessons at Puerto Escondido at a cost of £15 per person. In general, you can take part in all types of activities all over the country without having to take a serious dent in your travel budget.
